Sweet forum!
Oliver, I'm out in redwood country (the central part of it), and I very seldom find harvestable burls, that's awesome that you were able to get one back east.
I might have to venture the redwood's range to find a spot where they're more common.

I actually got it from a friend, who got it from a friend, who knew a guy, who had a dog... you know how it goes. Somewhere along that train was a guy who makes stuff out of redwood burls professionally, and somehow my friend got a bunch of scraps from those creations.

I used a dremel cutting disk. I didn't want to use any edged tools as the antler would either turn it away or ruin the edge.
I was also thinking of scrimshawing a picture or design on the antler... suggestions?

You need to get a pair of needle nose pliers and put them inside the opening of the twisty thing. Then, you open up the pliers and that pries it open. It shouldn't stay bend, it's springy. Watch out though, the first time I look one off it hit three walls before coming to rest. Then there is a little rivet you need to grind down and out so you can get the interior piece and the blade free.

Sheath oil?
Nice knives folks! I just finished making a sheath, but I don't have beeswax to put it in. Any suggestions for a good oil finish? I am still working on the knife itself, I'll put a picture up when its all cleaned up.

We used Lard in Ecuador. Adds a nice shine and darkening effect to the leather. Then dry it by a fire.

I usually just use melt down parafin candles, until the wax is just smoking. When I used beeswax I had less success, and I had to scrape off wax at the end.
